BHP Taharoa Relocation
Tranzcarr was awarded the Project to relocate the complete BHP Ironsand Plant, located at Taharoa on the West Coast of the North Island.
The three main loads were:
1000 Concentrate Wet Plant450 tonne Surge Bin250 tonne Dredge
To complete the work, a purpose built haul road had to to constructed for the 4.5 kilometre journey.
Also landing bunds had to be constructed at both ends of the haul, to allow the heavy loads to be landed once in position and the ponds pumped dry. This then allowed the trailers to be positioned under each load and using hydraulics, lift each load clear of the bunds and prepare for transporting. Steel beams and stools were used for the Dredge, so this could be positioned at the same time as the Surge Bin.
